Proving that its optical and imaging technologies deserve a seat at the table with the top camera manufacturers in the world, retailers and distributors selected the Samsung Electronics Galaxy camera as the first point-and-shoot camera to win a VIP Award.
Ironically, 2012 wasn’t exactly a banner year for point-andshoots, as the popularity of camera-equipped smartphones continued to erode demand for a dedicated simple-to-use camera.
But Samsung proved with the Galaxy that the addition of wireless image transfer and communication over Wi-Fi networks can be a powerful presentation to wow customers. The company also offers 3G-enabled version for even greater flexibility.
The Galaxy camera was not the first smart-camera, but it was one of the first cameras implementing an existing smart device operation system.
It is centered on the Android 4.1 software platform, and includes an intuitive user interface and, like a smartphone or tablet, offers access to Android applications from the Google Play market.
The Wi-Fi version of the Samsung Galaxy camera launched at a $449 suggested retail.
It was a very good year for Samsung’s imaging innovation, as the Galaxy camera was one of two cameras to be tabbed for the inaugural VIP awards. The company’s mirrorless NX300 also took the top honors for the compact system cameras segment.
