Philips Embraces 3D TV In A Big Way

LAS VEGAS — P&F USA will introduce here this week the first Philips-branded LCD TVs with FullHD 3D support highlighted by a widescreen 21:9 aspect ratio model, plus an expanded assortment of IPTV Wi-Fi connected LED and CCFL backlit models.

The highlight of the 2011 Philips TV showcase at the Renaissance Hotel, ballrooms 1, 2 and 3 here at International CES will be the 58-inch 58PFL9955 (pricing and availability to be announced) 21:9 Cinema- series model, featuring a 58-inch 3D-compatible, direct LED backlit screen with a 21:9 aspect ratio.

The 21:9 aspect ratio supports a majority of Hollywood releases, with minimal use of black bars at the top and bottom of the screen.

The 1080p/480Hz set includes support for active- shutter 3D glass (two pair will be included), and will include a built-in Wi-Fi connection to support MediaConnect capability. The company’s NetTV IPTV platform with access to more than 100 apps, including access to streaming services Netflix, Vudu, Blockbuster on Demand and FilmFresh.

In total, the company will offer four series of 3Dcapable 1080p TVs in 2011.

P&F’s top-of-the-line 8706-series 3Dcapable TVs feature a conventional 16:9 aspect ratio, 1080p/240Hz LCD panel with LED edge lighting. The 40- ($1,199 suggested retail), 46- ($1,499) and 55- inch ($1,799) screen sizes have those capabilities, plus all the networking features of 58PFL9955. Models also ship with two pairs of active-shutter 3D glasses.

The 6706 series features a 16:9 aspect ratio; 3D 1080p/120Hz edge-lit LED panel, 40- ($899), 46- ($1,199) and 55-inch ($1,499) screen sizes; and all the networking features of the 8706 series. Two pairs of 3D glasses are included.

The 5706 series features a 16:9 aspect ratio, 3D 1080p/120Hz CCFL backlit panel, and includes the 40- ($679), 46- ($899) and 55-inch ($1,099) screen sizes, and all the networking features of the 6706 series. 3D glasses are optional.

P&F will also offer four 2D LCD TV series, including 4506 line featuring a 16:9 aspect ratio, and 1080p/60Hz LED edge-lit panel. Screen sizes include 40 ($729), 46 ($979) and 55 inches ($1,299), all including Wi-Fi and networking features of the 5706 series.

The 4505 series will have the same Wi-Fi and networking features as the 4506 series, but will step down to 720p/60Hz panels in the 19- ($179), 22- ($229), and 32-inch ($449) screen sizes.

The 3507 series will omit networking features, and will use 1080p/60Hz CCFL backlit panels, in the 40- ($569) and 46-inch ($729) screen sizes. Both will include three HDMI, one PC and one USB input.

The entry 3505 series will include 720p/60Hz CCFL backlit panels and the input package of the 3507 series, in the 19- ($179), 22- ($219), and 32-inch ($349) screen sizes.

In Blu-ray Disc players P&F will introduce six Philips-branded players, four of which have 3D capability and all offering the company’s NetApps platform for streaming media access.

Highlighting the lineup is the BDP7506 ($220) 3D-capable Blu-ray player featuring touchpanel controls, a DLNA compliant Wi-Fi connection, Media Connect compatibility and NetApps with access to more than 100 apps, including Internet Radio, and Vudu, Netflix, Blockbuster on Demand and Flim- Fresh streaming.

The BDP5506 ($200) also support 3D playback with most of the features of the 7506, minus DLNA compliance.

The BDP3606 features 3D, NetApps, wireless connectivity and fast startup.

The BDP3506 ($170) is a 3D model with NetApps, but it omits out of the box wireless capability.

The BDP3306 ($150) Blu-ray player is a 2D model with wireless connectivity and NetApps.

The BDP3006 ($130) is a basic 2D model with NetApps but without included Wi-Fi connectivity.
