PC Retail 2003 Sales Top $39 Billion

New York – The TWICE Top 25 PC Retailers underwent a massive shakeup in 2003 with many retailers swapping places on the list as they spent the year adjusting computer retailing strategies.

The list posted a healthy 13.3 percent increase in 2003 with sales of PCs and related products hitting $39.13 billion. Much of the year over year increase was done on the back of improved computer sales, primarily notebook models, which experienced double-digit growth throughout 2003. This was a major shift from the previous three years when computers took a backseat to sales of computer peripheral such as flat-panel monitors, digital cameras and home networking systems, computers at least partially recaptured their former glory as the centerpiece product of the category.

Despite the upheaval on the TWICE report, the top two spots remained strongly in the hands of Best Buy and Dell with Best Buy continuing to dominate the category by posting $7.65 billion in sales, a 13.5 percent increase, or more than $2.5 billion more then runner-up Dell. By taking the top spot on the PC sales registry Best Buy grabbed first place in three of TWICE’s four retail sales lists. The Richfield, Minn. superstore chain was also first in overall consumer electronic and mobile electronics sales, but came in fourth in major appliance sales.

Here is a quick look at part of the list. The entire Top 25 PC Retailers list will shortly be for sale at www.twice.com.
