Onkyo AVRs To Add MHL, InstaPrevue

12/21/2011 12:20:12 PM Eastern

Osaka, Japan - Onkyo's 2012 line
of A/V receivers will incorporate Silicon Image's InstaPrevue technology as
well as HDMI ports enhanced with Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL) technology, Onkyo
announced.

When consumers connect an
MHL-compatible smartphone or tablet to an MHL-equipped AV receiver or directly
to an MHL-equipped TV, they can stream 1080p HD video and 7.1-channel surround
sound from the mobile device to their home theater system. The HDMI port of the
AV receiver or TV will also charge the portable device, and consumers will be
able to use their TV or AVR remote to control the playback of content streamed
from their MHL-enabled mobile device.

With Silicon Image's InstaPrevue
technology, the Onkyo AVRs will deliver live picture-in-picture previews of video sources connected via HDMI
inputs and MHL-enabled HDMI inputs. Video sources include Blu-ray Disc players,
game consoles, settop boxes, and MHL-enabled tablets and smartphones. The
technology makes it unnecessary for consumers to choose HDMI1, HDMI2, or HDMI3
inputs through a text-based menu if they want to switch among video sources,
Onkyo said.

Onkyo is the first home audio
supplier to announce plans for products with MHL-enhanced HDMI ports. In the TV
market, nine Samsung TVs already available in the U.S. can have their HDMI
ports upgraded to add MHL compatibility once a firmware upgrade is installed,
the MHL Consortium said. The upgrade, which is available, can be downloaded
directly from the Internet if the TV is connected to a home network, or it can
be installed via a USB port.

Worldwide, 23 smartphones feature MHL technology, and
many are available in the U.S., including the Samsung Galaxy S II, Samsung
Infuse, and HTC's EVO 3D, the Consortium said. The HTC Flyer and EVO 3D View 4G
tablets also feature MHL and are available in the U.S.

Adapters are available to connect
MHL-equipped mobile devices to TVs and AVRs that lack MHL technology, providing
all of the features that MHL enables, the Consortium noted.

Silicon Image's InstaPrevue technology will be demonstrated at CES in a
private booth in South Hall 2. Onkyo will demonstrate both technologies at a
public suite at the Venetian.
