Olympus Updates C-5050

9/29/2003 12:57:00 PM Eastern

Melville, N.Y. - Olympus announced the successor to its C-5050 digital camera on Sept. 29, the 5-megapixel C-5060 Wide Zoom.

The new C-5060 offers a wide-angle lens, 27mm to 110mm, f2.8 - f8.0, 4x optical/3.5x digital zoom, and features improved processing speed, greater zoom power, as well as a more-articulated LCD than its predecessor. The new LCD can be swiveled in multiple directions or rotated to hide the LCD and protect it from getting damaged.

The camera is also Olympus’ first with PictBridge compatibility, allowing users to print directly from the camera to any PictBridge-enabled photo printer, regardless of brand. (For more on the PictBridge standard.)

The SLR-type C-5060 features a built-in hot-shoe and can work with the optional Olympus FL-20 or FL-50 flash to provide full 'through the lens' metering. The camera is also compatible with Olympus’ Wide Angle and Tele Converter lenses, and a Power Grip battery.

The camera offers controls for aperture priority, shutter priority, and full manual operation. In fully Programmed Auto mode, the camera offers basic point-and-shoot operation. Scene programs on the mode dial provide fully automatic exposure adjustments for night scenes, portraits, landscape portraits, sports, and landscape photography. Eight programmable 'MyMode' settings allow the user to assign frequently used exposure settings for easy access.

The camera accepts both xD-Picture Card or Compact Flash Type I and II flash memory (including Microdrives) - and can hold both media cards simultaneously. It will ship with a 32MB xD card.

The C-5060 Wide Zoom will be available in November for a suggested retail price of $799.95.
