NYC City Hall Gets 103” Plasma Makeover

New York — Panasonic’s 103-inch 1080p plasma TV is the new centerpiece of the renovated New York City Hall “bullpen,” which reopened today after a major renovation to the entire building.

Panasonic, working with the assistance of Tom Campbell, technology advisor to Mayor Michael Bloomberg on the system, donated the $69,999 monster high-definition TV to the city of New York for the new high-tech central command complex, dubbed “the bullpen.”

The plasma set will help the mayor’s office monitor everything from news and information on the city’ local television and cable stations to 311 call statistics and video feeds from NYC TV’s City Drive Live traffic cameras. The huge screen will enable viewing multiple images at one time.

Under Bloomberg, the city redesigned the layout of City Hall into an open, centralized bullpen to improve management efficiencies and bring the mayor into direct contact with key operating departments.

The bullpen renovation, which was officially completed Monday when Bloomberg and his staff returned to the office after two weeks, included new wiring and technology upgrades.

Joining the mayor Monday to officially present the TV screen were: Joseph Taylor, Panasonic North America executive VP and COO, Andrew Nelkin, Panasonic professional display company president, Frank DeFina, Panasonic Systems Solutions president and Campbell.

“New York’s City Hall is the oldest and longest-serving city hall in the nation, and this desperately-needed renovation has given the building new life – making our office safer, more efficient and more technologically advanced,” said Mayor Bloomberg. “Panasonic has been a great corporate citizen, and I would like to thank them for their generous donation. I also want to thank the Office of Emergency Management and the great borough of Brooklyn for their hospitality over the last two weeks.”

“It is a great honor for Panasonic to have the flagship of our market-leading 1080p Plasma HDTVs be a part of New York’s City Hall,” said Panasonic’s Taylor. “Just as this cutting-edge display provides amazingly sharp, crisp video for entertainment purposes, it is also a great way for the city’s leaders to share remote video and other data vital to the safe and secure operation of the city’s systems.”

“It is wonderful to see New York’s City Hall moving so quickly to utilize the world’s most advanced flat-panel displays for its information display and video needs,” said Campbell. “City Hall has set the standard for high-technology implementation in the municipal space.”
