Nokia PND Phone Offers Free Services

White Plains,
N.Y.
– A new unlocked

Nokia

phone looks like
a PND-killer, offering preloaded North
America maps, an embedded route-calculation
engine and a lifetime of free connected services.

Just like a PND (portable navigation device), the
full-touchscreen 5800 Navigation Edition  provides spoken turn-by-turn driving
instructions with lane assistance and 3D map images, and because maps and route
calculation software reside on the device rather than on a cellular carrier’s
servers, the phone can be used for navigation even when cellular signal is
lost. The phone also offers points-of-interest (POI)
information content such as restaurants and hotel information, speed-limit
warnings, and speed-camera alerts based on embedded databases that can be
updated via over-the-air downloads.

Like a connected PND, it offers near real-time traffic-congestion information, event and movie
listings, and a weather service providing 24-hour and five-day forecasts.

The 3G HSDPA phone also comes with comes with car kit for dash- or windshield-mounting, and it features
a pedestrian navigation mode to guide pedestrians up one-way streets and through parks, pathways and other
shortcuts.

The device features 3.2-inch widescreen display and assisted GPS, and is available through

www.nokiausa.com

and independent online and retail
channels at around $299.

Other select unlocked
phones from Nokia, including the new E72, offer preloaded maps and route
calculation without turn-by-turn guidance. For voice-guided navigation and connected premium
content – such as event and movie listings, traffic reports and weather
reports – a consumer must pay a subscription fee to Nokia for one-day, 30-day,
or annual service. A month costs $8.89, and a year costs $63.99.

The business-class E72, also with assisted GPS,
will be available through

www.nokiausa.com

, Best Buy and other
independent retail channels at around $469. It’s promoted for its messaging
features, supports corporate email via Mail for Exchange or IBM Lotus Notes Traveler, accesses up to 10 personal
email accounts, and enables IM directly from the home screen. It features a
full QWERTY keyboard, an optical navigation key, 5-megapixel camera with
auto-focus and flash, media and music players, and Ovi Maps with A-GPS navigation and a compass. It also enables separate
home screens for work and personal time. Its map database includes 3D
landmarks.

The E72 comes with 10 days of turn-by-turn voice-guided
navigation for driving as well as 10 days of free weather and other premium
content. The 10 days can be used consecutively or non-consecutively.
