Redmond, Wash — Nintendo sold 2.15 million Wii video game consoles in North America during December to reach a new single-year sales record for a videogame platform at 10.17 million units, according to numbers released by The NPD Group.

Meanwhile, NPD reported Microsoft’s Xbox 360 sold 1.44 million units in December, up from 1.26 million a year ago, to top sales of Sony’s PlayStation 3 (PS3) two-to-one in the period. Sales of the PS3 reached 726,000 units in the period, up 92 percent from November, but down from the 798,000 units sold in 2007.

Sony said full-year sales of the PS3 reached 3.6 million units in North America, an increase of 40 percent from the previous year, according to NPD.

For portable game players, North American sales of the Nintendo DS reached 3.04 million units in December and 9.95 million units for 2008. The annual number passed the Nintendo DS’s record last year of 8.52 million units.

Sony said U.S. sales of its PlayStation Portable (PSP) and the Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters PSP Entertainment Pack reached more than 1 million units in December, up 143 percent from November.
