Englewood Cliffs, N.J. — LG rolled out its next-generation Lucid LTE smartphone, the Lucid 2, through Verizon Wireless, which priced the phone for free with contract.

The Android phone replaces LG’s Lucid, launched a year ago by Verizon at $79 and targeted, like the Lucid 2, to first-time smartphone users because of price and user-interface features.

The Lucid2 is available online at VerizonWireless.com and will be available in Verizon Wireless Communications Stores in the coming weeks, LG said. Information about indirect-channel sales wasn’t unavailable.

Upgrades include 4.3-inch qHD touchscreen with IPS, compared with a 4-inch WVGA IPS touchscreen; Android 4.1.2 vs. 4.0; 2,460 mAh battery, compared with the original’s 1,700 mAh; wireless charging with optional battery cover; Bluetooth 4.0 vs. 3.0; and 64GB MicroSD slot vs. 32GB.

Carryover features include 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB embedded memory, DLNA, 5-megapixel 1080p-capture main camera and a video-chat camera.

The new model also packs UI enhancements, including the ability for users to choose between a starter mode or standard mode when the phone is removed from its box. Starter mode presents smartphone newcomers with a simpler experience via five homescreens with preset widgets such as My Apps, My Contacts and My Settings. Standard mode presents the usual Android experience.

The new model also adds QuickMemo, an app that allows users to capture screenshots and use their finger to add personalized commentary or drawings.

Other features include Video Editor and Video Wiz apps, which deliver video-editing capabilities.

The Lucid 2 joins three other LG phones at Verizon: the $29 Spectrum, $79 Spectrum2 and $149 Intuition, Verizon’s website shows.

The original Lucid featured step-by-step on-device tutorials and customizable homescreens with resizable widgets.
