New Palm OS Slated To Ship This Summer

2/05/2002 12:46:00 PM Eastern

San Jose, Calif. - PalmSource, the newly named Palm OS subsidiary of Palm, showed a beta version of Palm OS 5 expected to be released this summer.

The new operating system will enable Palm products to support the ARM processor, versus Palm's current and less powerful Dragonball processor. This upgrade is considered key to Palm's ability to remain technologically competitive with the PocketPC, according to analysts.

Unveiled at the PalmSource Conference and Expo here, the new OS will also deliver enhanced data security, multimedia and wireless networking, as well as compatibility with existing Palm OS software programs, said Palm.

It will support an improved high-density screen allowing double the resolution of up to 320 by 320 pixels. It will also support 802.11b as well as WAN and Bluetooth and will allow users to record sound and play CD quality digital audio, said Palm. The company also claims the new OS will continue to offer the same battery life, even with the enhancements.

Products using the new Palm OS 5 are expected to follow shortly after the summer.
