New Chip Brings Android To Cameras

12/22/2010 12:31:24 PM Eastern

Santa Clara, Calif. - Video compression semiconductor
manufacturer Ambarella said Wednesday
its iOne system-on-chip (SoC), with advanced HD and multimedia
capabilities is available for digital imaging devices using the Android
platform.

The chip will allow devices to leveraging the Android ecosystem
and cloud-based video services in a new class of smart camera devices, the
company said.

The chip will support advanced HD still and video recording,
Internet-connectivity, and running powerful applications.

Multi-stream encoding capability in the chip supports live video
streaming, and Wi-Fi uploading of video clips to social networking sites and
YouTube.

Multi-format video decoding enables the playback of Internet and
broadcast based video content up to 1080p/60fps resolution, including 3D HDTV.

"Coupling our proven video and imaging processing expertise with
the Android platform enables next generation cameras to take a significant leap
forward in user experiences and capabilities," stated Fermi Wang, Ambarella
CEO. "The iOne will fundamentally change the way consumers capture, create and
share visual content. We are very excited about the possibilities."

The iOne is said to be based on a triple ARM CPU architecture
specifically developed for low-power mobile media applications. Dual-core 1-GHz
ARM Cortex A9 CPUs provide the horsepower to run Android applications while a
third 533MHz ARM-11 handles real-time camera tasks and a boot time of less an a
second. The iOne requires only a single x32 DRAM for extremely low power
operation and low total system cost. A powerful 3D graphics engine supports HD
GUI requirements and OpenGL ES 2.0.

Ambarella said the iOne SoC is sampling now to early access
customers.
