Microsoft Q1 Revenue Climbs 26%

Redmond, Wash. - Microsoft recorded record fiscal first-quarter revenue of $7.8 billion in the period ended Sept. 30, a 26 percent gain over the $6.1 billion reported in the year-ago period and posted a net profit of almost $3 billion.

Operating income for the first quarter was $4.1 billion, compared with $2.9 billion in the same three months in 2001. Net income for the first three months of the fiscal year was $2.7 billion, including an after-tax charge of $291 million for investment impairments. Net income for the same period the previous year came in at $1.3 billion.

The Americas region accounted for the largest portion of Microsoft sales in the first quarter, registering $2.7 billion, up from $2.3 billion in the same three months last year.

Microsoft expects revenue in the range of $8.5 billion and $8.6 billion for its second fiscal quarter ending Dec. 31. Operating income is anticipated in the range of $3.2 billion and $3.3 billion.

For the full fiscal year, ending June 30, 2003, the company expects revenue in the range of $32.2 billion to $32.6 billion. Operating income for the year is anticipated in the range of $14.1 billion and $14.4 billion.
