Microsoft Names Additional Home Server Product Partners

Los Angeles — Microsoft announced today at its WinHEC engineering conference that Gateway, LaCie and Medion will develop products based on Microsoft’s Windows Home Server operating system.

These three companies join Hewlett-Packard, which stated at International CES that it would start shipping the HP MediaSmart server later this year, and which also uses the Home Server operating system. Gateway and LaCie did not release details on what types of Home Server-powered hardware they will roll out, but Medion will demonstrate its product, code-named Medion Home Server, at WinHEC this week, Microsoft said.

The Medion device will feature storage options ranging from 500GB up to 2TB and will offer Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA)-compliant universal plug-and-play media streaming based on PacketVideo Connect software. It is scheduled to ship by the end of 2007. Pricing was not announced.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates also revealed eight companies that have developed software for the Home Server operating system.

These companies are:

  • Diskeeper’s Diskeeper 2007, which will support Home Server;
  • Embedded Automation’s mControl, which will work with Home Server to manage a home’s lighting systems, security, climate control and A/V components;
  • F-Secure, which will have anti-virus software available;
  • Iron Mountain, which will integrate its data protections services with Home Server;
  • Lagotek’s Home Intelligence Platform home automation software, which will support Home Server;
  • PacketVideo’s Connect, which will enable DLNA 1.0 and 1.5-certified media streaming from the server to a variety of home entertainment devices in the home;
  • Riptopia’s CD loading service, which will convert and load a customer’s CD collection onto the server; and
  • SageTV’s media server software, which will provide an always-on environment for digital entertainment devices.
