West Palm Beach, Fla. – MagicJack, the provider of over-the-top VoIP service sold at retail, appointed Anthony Russo as mobile VP.

Russo will lead the ongoing expansion of MagicJack’s over the top VoIP solution for smartphones, the company said.

He previously directed global mobile strategy and iOS and Android app development at Vonage.

“The magicJack voice app is an important part of our growth strategy as we continue to enhance our unique at-home and on-the-go voice service,” said COO Timothy McDonald. Russo’s appointment “helps us to ensure MagicJack's ongoing growth as the preferred over-the-top mobile voice provider,” he said.

Before joining Vonage, Russo held a number of product and sales positions at AT&T Mobility and Cingular Wireless.

More than 10 million magicJack mobile apps have been downloaded for free on iTunes and Google Play. The app lets consumers use Wi-Fi or cellular on their mobile device to place VoIP calls. Consumer with a home MagicJack account can receive calls made to the home’s number and place calls using the home’s number. If the app user is not a MagicJack customer, the app assigns a random number for outbound calling.

The app is also promoted as a solution for using mobile phones in areas with poor cellular connections, such as deep inside buildings.

MagicJack currently offers its third-generation VoIP device – magicJack PLUS – for $49.95 including six months of service. The device uses a home or office Internet connection to replace landlines for a service price of only $29.95 a year. The service price includes unlimited local and long distance calls to the U.S. and Canada, unlimited international calls to the U.S., and unlimited MagicJack-to-MagicJack calls worldwide.

The company plans to come out with new devices, enhanced apps and increased retail distribution in 2014.
