Englewood Cliffs, N.J. — LG Electronics flat-panel TVs with Netcast Entertainment Access that are shipping now use Broadcom’s integrated BCM3549 digital TV (DTV) system-on-a-chip (SoC), the companies revealed Monday.

Broadcom, based in Irvine, Calif., said the chip is included in LG’s two LCD and plasma HDTV series with IPTV capability to connect to the Netflix instant-streaming service and other services enabled through the Yahoo! Widgets system and interface.

"In another industry first for LG, our new Broadband HDTV line provides consumers the ability to access Netflix instant streaming and Yahoo! Widgets directly through their HDTV enabling a whole new entertainment experience in the home," said Tim Alessi, new product development director, LG Electronics USA. "Broadcom's advanced digital TV technology features the latest in connectivity and continues to push the envelope in TV picture quality, performance and features. We are pleased to continue our multi-year partnership with Broadcom."

The BCM3549 SoC uses advanced multi-format decoding and home network connectivity via an integrated Ethernet media access controller (MAC) and physical layer (PHY) capabilities to enable users to connect with multiple home network devices such as media servers, PCs, MP3 devices and portable media players (PMPs), and allows access to a multitude of Internet-based multimedia content, Broadcom said.

"This is our third-generation product powering LG televisions, and together we are revolutionizing the home consumer entertainment experience," said Dan Marotta, senior VP and general manager of Broadcom's broadband communications group.
