Lexar Hops Into Portable Drive Market

Fremont, Calif. – Lexar Media announced today that it has begun global shipments for its JumpDrive, a new high-speed portable USB flash drive for consumers.

The drive features solid-state architecture and embedded Lexar Media patented controller technology, for storage and transfer of digital text, images and audio and data files.

The thumb-sized JumpDrive is available in 64 and 128MB memory capacities with a manufacturer’s suggested list of $79.99 and $119.99, respectively.

The 128MB JumpDrive can hold the same amount of information as 90 floppy disks.

Lexar is positioning the JumpDrive as ‘the easier, more convenient medium for transferring data than CD burning,’ according to a company statement.

The device is USB mass storage compliant, making it plug and play for operating systems including Windows 2000, Me, XP or Mac OS 8.6, 9 or X. A driver is available for Windows 98 at Lexar’s Web-site (www.lexarmedia.com).

The drive is designed to function as a key chain, allowing users to carry data in their pocket, briefcase or clipped to their backpack.

JumpDrive has a built-in data write protection light that blinks while files are being written to, or transferred from, the device. It also features a recessed write-protect switch to further guard against accidental data erasure.
