LCD Shipments Hit All-Time High

Austin, Texas — LCD monitor shipments hit an all time high in the third quarter with 34.6 million units shipped worldwide, according to DisplaySearch.

The LCD market grew 21.9 percent year-over-year and 16.3 percent from the previous quarter. Worldwide revenues grew as well from the second quarter, jumping 7.4 percent to $9.4 billion; however, the vast majority of this growth took place outside the North American market, which saw quarterly sequential growth nudge up just 2 percent.

The areas in North America that did grow were 19W-inch and 20W-inch models. The 19W-inch models grew by 129 percent in the quarter, doubling its market share to 8.1 percent, while the 20W-inch increased 23 percent. Unit growth in the 4:3 aspect ratio 17-inch and 19-inch categories grew 12 percent and 11 percent, respectively, but their market share remained basically flat. The 15-inch models saw no growth during the third quarter, and DisplaySearch expects the 19W-inch models to outsell the 15-inch LCDs for the first time during the 2006 fourth quarter.
