Kmart To Carry Blu-ray, HD DVD In Stores

11/06/2007 10:34:00 AM Eastern

Hoffman Estates, Ill. — Kmart plans to support both Blu-ray and HD DVD high-definition video disc formats in its stores, the company’s chief CE merchant said.

Jonathan Magasanik, home electronics VP/general merchandise manager for Sears Holdings, issued a statement last week to correct what he called numerous false statements in the media indicating that Kmart would carry HD DVD product exclusively. The statements were attributed to Toshiba.

“Kmart plans to support both the HD DVD and Blu-ray platforms, and has no plans to support either platform exclusively,” Magasanik said.

Online reports last week indicated that Kmart was removing standalone Blu-ray players from its shelves in favor of under-$200 HD DVD units, and would only be represented in Blu-ray hardware by PlayStation 3 consoles.
