Kindle Tops Amazon Gift Sales

said
its Kindle e-book reader has become the “most gifted item” in the company’s
history this holiday season, with sales of e-books outpacing physical books for
the first time on Christmas Day.

The e-tail pioneer said December has proven to be the best month
ever for Kindle sales, and described its proprietary device as “the No. 1 best-selling,
most wished for and most gifted product” across its entire assortment.

“We are grateful to our customers for making Kindle the most gifted
item ever in our history,” said Amazon.com founder/CEO Jeff Bezos.

Separately, Amazon reported that its peak selling day this season
was Dec. 14, when customers ordered more than 9.5 million items worldwide. On
its peak shipping day, more than 7 million units were dispatched by its global
fulfillment network, the company reported.

Amazon said its best-selling products between Nov. 15 and Dec.
19, based on unit sales, included:

Electronics: Kindle, Apple iPod Touch 8GB and
Garmin Nuvi 260W 4.3-inch GPS;

·        
Wireless: Nokia 5800 XpressMusic unlocked phone,
Plantronics 510 Bluetooth headset and BlackBerry Bold 9700 phone for AT&T;

·        
Video gaming: Wii Fit Plus with balance board,
New Super Mario Bros., and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2;

·        
Software: Microsoft Office Home and Student
2007, Adobe Photoshop Elements 8, and Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Home &
Student Edition; and

·        
Fitness:
Omron HJ-112 digital pocket pedometer.
