iPad Regains Tablet Share Lead In U.S.

FRAMINGHAM, MASS. – Apple lost share in the global tablet market in 2012 and the first half of 2013, but in the U.S., Apple gained share in 2013’s first half following a slight dip in 2012, IDC statistics show.

In the first half, Apple also regained the lead in U.S. tablet shipment in units.

Apple’s first-half share of factory-level tablet shipments rose to 48.9 percent compared with Android’s second-place 45.5 percent, with Windows tablet share at 4.8 percent and Windows RT share at 0.4 percent.

In 2012, Apple ranked second in the U.S. with 46.2 percent share compared with Android’s 51.3 percent. Apple also ranked second in 2011, when Android share hit 48 percent compared with Apple’s 47.2 percent.

Globally, Apple isn’t doing as well as it is in the U.S. when performance is measured by unit shipment share. Apple slipped into second place in calendar 2012 and the first half of 2013 after losing share to Android in both time periods.

In the first half of 2013, Apple’s global share slipped to 36.9 percent from full-year 2012’s 45.6 percent and 2011’s 53.2 percent. Android’s share grew during 2012 to 52 percent to rank at the top in unit share after coming in second in 2011 with 43.1 percent share. Android’s global tablet share rose to 59 percent in the first half of 2013.
