HTC Shifts Strategy With UMPC

Bellevue, Wash. — Smartphone maker HTC made its first mobile computer, the Shift ultra-mobile PC (UMPC), available this week through Amazon.com and HTC’s own web site.

The $1,499 1.8-pound Shift, based on the Vista Business Edition OS, is HTC’s first handheld device built on a full-fledged PC OS. The device features embedded CDMA 1x EV-DO wireless data for use on Sprint’s network and a 7-inch sliding touchscreen that slides back and tilts up to assume a laptop-like form factor. Other features include 40GB HDD, 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 2.0 and Windows Media Player 11.
