El Segundo, Calif. — Hewlett-Packard continued its dominance in the global PC market, broadening its lead over Dell, according to a recent iSuppli report.
HP shipped 13.1 million units during the third quarter, up 3.2 million from the same period in 2006. Dell also increased its units shipped to 9.9 million, compared with the 9.8 million shipped during last year’s third quarter.
The increased shipments pushed HP’s market share to 19.2 percent, a 2.7 percent increase. Dell’s market share fell almost 2 points to 14.6 percent.
“Hewlett-Packard continues to gain momentum in the PC market due to its strong channel presence and its moves to capitalize on the strength of the notebook segment,” said Matthew Wilkins, principal analyst for iSuppli.
Adding to Dell’s problem is the Taiwanese-based Acer. This company posted the best third-quarter performance, with shipments rising an explosive 68.8 percent to 5.4 million, giving it a worldwide share of 7.9 percent.
Leading the way for Acer, and all the companies, were notebook sales. Acer’s share of the laptop market increased enough for it to be the second-largest notebook maker, displacing Dell.

The other major player on the world market was Lenovo. Despite Acer’s impressive third-quarter surge, it could not shift Lenovo out of third place. Lenovo’s 8.1 percent of the market was just enough to keep it safe; however, iSuppli believes Lenovo’s position is tenuous as Acer’s recent acquisition of Gateway should give it enough momentum to push it into third place in the near future.
Global PC shipments amounted to 68.1 million units in the third quarter, up 13.8 percent from 59.9 million during the same period in 2006, and up 11.1 percent from 61.3 million in the second quarter of 2007.
The notebook segment continued to drive the expansion of the overall PC market, with year-over-year growth of 33.5 percent. However, desktop PC shipments increased at a healthy pace as well, increasing to 39 million, up 3.4 percent from 37.7 million in the third quarter of 2006. iSuppli’s latest worldwide PC forecast called for unit growth of 12 percent in 2007.
