San Francisco - Hewlett-Packard today became the latest player to enter the tablet PC arena, with the introduction of the HP Palm TouchPad.

The TouchPad will be available this summer, with the company
initially shipping this Wi-Fi version, but 3G and 4G models will follow at an
undesignated date. Pricing was not revealed.

The Wi-Fi Touchpad has a 9.7-inch screen, weighs about 1.5
pounds, and has 16GB or 32GB of storage. It is powered by a Qualcomm's dual-core 1.2GHz
processor and will run flash.

This WebOS 3.0-based device was unveiled at a jam-packed press
event held at the Fort Mason Center, here.

Amazon announced a Kindle app for the Touchpad while the event
was taking place.

The tablet was just one of the announcements. Joining it was the
HP Veer smartphone. It features a 2.6-inch display, slide-out keyboard, 5-megapixel
camera and 8GB of storage, and it can act as a Wi-Fi hot spot for five devices.

The Veer will be available in early spring; pricing and carriers
were not announced.

The tablet market quickly became a crowded place, with dozens of
new models being introduced in January at International CES. HP declined to
enter the fray at CES; an executive stated the company did not want its
entry to be lost in the avalanche of tablets at the show.

The tablet PC market in 2011 is slated to ship anywhere between
22 million and 55 million units, depending upon which research firm's data is
viewed. The next several years should see a massive adoption of these devices.
Gartner has the number of tablets -- which it defines as any device that supports
a touchscreen and runs a lightweight OS like iOS or Android -- hitting 154
million by 2013.
