HP Issues Recall And Firmware Update

Palo Alto, Calif. — Hewlett Packard issued a recall for the Photosmart R707 camera because of a potential fire hazard.

HP shipped roughly 224,000 cameras between August 2004 and April 2006. The recall revolves a potential fire hazard caused by using a non-rechargeable battery, which can overheat when connected to an AC adapter or the company’s docking station.

According to U.S. regulators, there has only been one report of a camera catching fire. No injuries have been cited.

Owners of the R707 can avoid the hazard by downloading a firmware upgrade that prevents the camera from applying a charge when non-rechargeable batteries are in the camera.
