HP Debuts Cingular EDGE Smartphone

Palo Alto, Calif. — HP and Cingular Wireless today announced the HP iPAQ hw6500 series Mobile Messenger, the company’s first Pocket PCs in the United States to use the Cingular EDGE network.

Two versions in the new HP hw6500 series, the 6515 and 6510, will also be the sole U.S. carrier for the hw6500 line starting Oct. 31. The smartphones can operate in 13,000 U.S. cities and towns along more than 40,000 miles of interstate highway where the Cingular EDGE network is now available. Cingular claims its EDGE network is the largest and fastest national wireless in GPS. The 6515 will add a 1.3 megapixel digital camera. Both models also feature wireless e-mail, digital voice, Bluetooth and a built-in keyboard.

HP and Cingular have also joined forces with 14 application providers to create a one-stop shopping center for mobile device software, called the HP Mobility Solutions Evaluation Center ( www.hp.com/go/mobile-evaluation . Solutions offered will include Good Technology’s GoodLink wireless messaging and data software and Cingular Xpress Mail.Microsoft Pocket Streets for GPS navigation will be available as a free download for HP iPAQ hw6500 customers in North America.

The hw6500 series will be available at Cingular stores and select Cingular authorized dealers and at www.hpshopping.com . Cingular will offer the device at $449 with a two-year contract, and $39.99 per month for unlimited data with a qualified voice plan.
