HD DVD-R/RW Toshiba Qosmio Launched

Toshiba will expand its high-end Qosmio notebook line at International CES this week with the addition of the HD DVD-R/RW-equipped G45-AV90 model.

The G45-AV90 will be the first laptop sold in the United States featuring an HD DVD rewritable burner, Toshiba said. The drive recordable media is capable of holding 30GB of data and delivering it at 1080p HD resolution.

The G45-AV90’s other A/V-related specifications include an HDMI port so the notebook can be connected to a high-definition TV, an NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT GPU with full DirectX 10 support to generate the HD images stored on the HD DVD drive, and Dolby Home Theater 5.1 surround sound.

The laptop has a 1-bit digital amplifier, Bass Reflex speaker technology from four Harman Kardon speakers, and a built-in subwoofer.

The display is a Toshiba Ultimate TruBrite widescreen with 1,920 by 1,200 resolution.

Other video-related features include an OpenCable HDTV tuner, enabling the notebook to be connected to a cable or satellite video source, and DVR functionality.

Pricing has not been set, although the current Qosmio G45-AV680 carries a street price in the $2,800 range. The latest model is expected to ship during the first quarter of 2008.

Toshiba will also show the new Satellite P205D-S8806 at CES this week.

The unit will feature the 64-bit AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual Core Mobile Technology Gold Edition TL-64 processor running at 2.2GHz with 1MB of L2 cache, but it will come with the 32-bit version of Microsoft’s Vista Home Premium operating system.

It has 2GB of PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM memory expandable to 4GB, a 200GB 5,400 rpm hard drive, DVD Multi Drive, 17-inch LCD, and an ATI Mobility Radeon X1200 graphics card with 128MB to 319MB of dynamically allocated shared graphics memory. For added security there is a fingerprint reader.

It will ship with a $999 street price.
