Geek Squad Founder Leaving Best Buy

Minneapolis, Minn. – Best Buy’s chief technology officer Robert
Stephens is leaving the company, effective today.

Stephens is the founder of Geek Squad, which began as a
Minneapolis PC repair company in 1994 and was acquired by Best Buy eight years
later as an entrée into the services business.

Following Geek Squad’s integration into the chain, he became Best
Buy’s chief technology officer and resident futurist, identifying long-term
industry trends that helped set the company’s strategic direction.

Stephens will continue to work with Best Buy on a project-by-project
basis, and will also continue to identify strategic opportunities for the
company and provide his “insights and ideas on the Geek Squad brand and
culture,” CEO Brian Dunn said.

Dunn described Stephens as “our advance technology scout” and a
born entrepreneur. “Frankly, I knew it was only a matter of time before his
curiosity and his desire to create something new would lead him to look outside
the walls of Best Buy,” he said.

Stephens plans to relocate to California.
