Gateway Widens CE Product Line

Poway, Calif. – Gateway took another small step in its conversion into becoming a CE dealer with the introduction of two portable digital music players.

Two versions of the Gateway Digital Music Players will become available this week; one with 128MB of memory and the second with 256MB. Respective suggested prices are $129 and $169. The 128MB version can store up to two hours of MP3-formatted music. The 256MB unit has double this capacity. They support the MP3 and WMA music formats.

Gateway described the devices as being about the size of a pack of chewing gum and weighing around 1.5 ounces. They connect to a PC via the USB port and can play for 10 hours on a single AAA battery. The devices can also store data and can be used as digital voice recorders

These introductions are part of Gateway’s long-range plan to become a CE-centric manufacturer and retailer. In recent weeks the company has introduced a series of plasma and LCD TVs. By the end of 2003 more than 50 CE products in 15 new categories and open up several new concept stores designed to sell these new devices.
