FLO TV Adds First PPV Event

5/07/2010 10:38:59 AM Eastern

San Diego - Making good on its promise to offer new services, FLO TV is launching its inaugural PPV (pay-per-view) broadcast.
The company will offer Ultimate Fighting Championship bouts on an ongoing basis starting with the May 8 rematch of UFC light heavyweight champ Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida and challenger Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. The mixed martial arts event will be broadcast live as it happens at 10:00 p.m. EDT and will be rebroadcast continuously for 24 hours.
The price is $44.99 for viewing through the company's handheld Personal Television and installed in-car A/V systems with FLO TV tuner.
UFC PPV events will be the first in a series of new services that FLO TV will introduce in the coming months, including services that integrate video with Web-based content and social-media tools. Qualcomm's FLO TV subsidiary also plans tiered subscription options for its handheld TV and in-vehicle systems and a download-and-store capability for its Personal Television, which incorporates 4GB of embedded memory, and for cellphones equipped with FLO TV tuner and memory. The download-and-store capability, which can be added to existing devices via a software update, won't be available for in-vehicle FLO TV systems because those systems lack memory storage.
Initially, the company might dedicate some of its bandwidth to push previously broadcast TV programs of its choice to FLO TV devices for local storage, the company previously said.  In the future, the service could evolve to enable consumers to use a PC or a FLO device's Wi-Fi to select the programs they want to download and store.
