EarthLink Begins Wi-Fi Phone Trial

Anaheim, Calif. — Internet service provider EarthLink has begun a trial of Wi-Fi phone service, here.

The service leverages EarthLink’s municipal Wi-Fi network using a SIP-based handset from Accton. Calls placed through the handset can reach landlines, cellphones and other VoIP services. The Accton handset can connect to the phone service through the municipal network or through a home access point.

The service and handset will be free during the test and EarthLink expects to charge $14.95 a month for 500 outbound minutes with free, unlimited inbound minutes.

It will also offer an all-you-can dial plan for $24.95 a month, alongside a $100 charge for the equipment — which includes the handset, a charger cradle and a Wi-Fi router for home calling.
