DTV Sales Up 72% In August

August sales of digital television (DTV) products rose 72 percent over the same period in 2003, to reach 514,065 units, according to revised CEA figures.

The association corrected an earlier announcement for period to add flat-panel LCD and plasma TVs.

“Our industry continues to focus on expanding the market for DTV. The strong sales in August reflect that commitment,” said CEA president Gary Shapiro.

The association said dollar sales, which totaled over $749 million, rose 68 percent over Aug. 2003. In year-to-date totals, unit sales have reached 3.6 million and dollar sales were more than $5.3 billion.

In other news, CEA said it hold five local HDTV update meetings in the fall of 2004 to alert interested parties on where the analog to DTV transition is heading.

The program unites local cable operators and broadcasters with retailers and other local DTV leaders to discuss the collaboration to accomplish better consumer awareness of HDTV.

The first meeting recently kicked off in Chicago, and will be followed by Newark, N.J. (Oct. 5); San Francisco (Oct. 20); Los Angeles (Oct. 21); and New York (Nov. 10).
