Dell, HP In Dead Heat As Top PC Shipper: iSuppli

El Segundo, Calif. — The research firm iSuppli reported that while Hewlett-Packard wrested away the top PC shipper title from Dell for the fourth quarter of 2006, Dell managed to barely keep its crown as the leading supplier for the year.

Dell fended off HP by less then a percentage point, iSuppli said, garnering 16.3 percent of the market compared with HP‘s 16 percent. During the year Dell shipped 39 million computers, up 4 percent from 20005, to HP’s 38.2 million, which represented a 19 percent increase.

Lenovo and Acer also generated impressive shipment growth last year with the former company increasing shipments 19.1 percent and the latter 36.9 percent. For the year Lenovo shipped 16.6 million units, for 7 percent of the market, while Acer shipped 13.2 million for a 5.5 percent share.

Fujitsu took fifth place on the iSuppli list for 2006, shipping 8.2 million computers, up 2.8 percent from 2005, for 3.5 percent of the market.

HP’s fourth-quarter growth was very strong, increasing 21.1 percent on 11.6 million units shipped, for 17.4 percent of the market. Dell saw its growth slip 8.6 percent, giving it 14.5 percent of the market on 9.6 million units shipped.

Dell recently underwent a high-profile housecleaning with company founder and chairman Michael Dell taking over the CEO slot from Kevin Rollins.

Lenovo, Acer and Toshiba all posted increased growth with Acer again leading the way, improving 42.7 percent compared with the fourth quarter last year.
