Baltimore, Md. –
will
expand its Mythos XTR series of thin high-performance on-wall speakers to four
models from one in November with the shipment of two more LCRs and the first
surround speaker in the series.
The two additional LCRs will expand the line’s selection to match
more TV sizes and offer more performance levels, said EVP Dave Peet.
The new models will be displayed at the CEDIA Expo in Sound Room 8
along with the company’s
of bipolar towers speakers and
matching center-channels and surrounds.
The first Mythos XTR, the XTR-50, is an LCR billed as the world’s
thinnest on-wall speaker with 1.5-inch-deep aluminum-extruded chassis
intended for use with a growing selection of ever-thinner LED TVs. The two new
companion LCRs in the series are also 1.5-inches-deep, and the first surround
in the series in 2.5-inches-deep. All LCRs can be mounted horizontally or
vertically.
The first Mythos XTR, the $699-suggested XTR-50, is a 27x6x1.5-inch model sized for use with
46- to 55-inch flat-panel TVs. It shipped in March. The two new LCRs – the
XTR-60 and XTR-40 — are priced at a suggested $899 and $499 with heights of 32
inches and 23.25 inches, respectively, for use with additional display sizes.
The XTR-60 is intended for 55- to 60-inch and larger displays, and the
XTR-40 is intended for 40- to 42-inch displays. The bipolar surround is the $279
11.5-inch-tall XTR-20BP.
Definitive used
multiple technologies and design elements to deliver “the kind of
clarity, dynamic range and accuracy that one would expect from a premium-priced
normally sized speaker,” the company said. The company thinned out the LCRs without thinning
out the sound by using dynamic drivers, which use a voice coil sitting in a
magnetic field, instead of turning to flat-panel drivers, which the company
said don’t perform as well. To get dynamic drivers into a 1.5-inch-deep
chassis, Definitive turned to dome drivers instead of traditional cone drivers,
enabling the company to place the voice coil inside the dome to reduce depth.
Also to reduce depth, the company used small-but-strong neodymium magnets and
allowed the magnets to protrude through the enclosure’s back panel while
remaining flush with the back of the enclosure. A gasket around the magnet
prevents air leakage and conducts heat to the aluminum back panel, turning the
back panel into a heat sink.
All XTR enclosures are made from aircraft-grade extruded aluminum,
which also provides space efficiencies and features superior acoustic characteristics,
the company noted.
To extend and deepen the
bass response, patent-pending XTDD bass drivers are pressure-coupled to
aluminum-dome low-bass radiators in the new XTR-60 and XTR-40 as well as in the
original XTR-50.
The center-mounted tweeter
used throughout the line is the Pure Aluminum dome tweeter usewd by in
Definitive in its top-of-the-line Mythos ST SuperTower.
All XTR
models ship with included wall-mount bracket enabling vertical or horizontal placement.
The new XTR-60 and original XTR-50 also come with smoked, tempered-glass stand,
and XTR-20BP surround comes with a stand for vertical tabletop placement. The
XTR-60, XTR-50, and XTR-40 also come with stand for horizontal shelf placement.
