Salt Lake City -Control4 has begun shipping a $599-suggested home-automation controller that controls a home entertainment system but can also be used to control lighting, climate control and security systems throughout the house.

The 1.2- by 8.6- by 4.9-inch HC-250, small enough to fit behind a TV, is designed for use with Control 4's ZigBee-based handheld RF remotes, which control a Control4 GUI appearing on a connected TV set.

Home systems can also be controlled from Control4's dedicated in-wall and tabletop touchscreens and from Wi-Fi tablets and smartphones running the Control4 MyHome application.

The device is also suited for light commercial installs, the company said.

Compared with its predecessor, the device is smaller and adds a 1GHz processor and next-generation wireless ZigBee processor for faster response to commands, the company said.

The HC-250 also features power-over-Ethernet (PoE) to get power via the same Ethernet cable that provides network and home automation capabilities.

The component incorporates Wi-Fi 802.11 n/g at 2.4GHz, front-panel IR blaster and IR receiver, four 3.5mm IR ports, two RS-232 ports, one relay, one contact control, and one USB port to connect an external hard drive that stores music and pictures.

It also features HDMI output for digital audio and on-TV GUI, a component-video output, one 3.5mm analog audio output and one 3.5mm analog audio input.

Another recently launched controller, the HC-800, is larger, at 2 by 17.3 by 9.2 inches and features a dual-core 1.8GHz processor and more inputs, outputs, contacts and relays.
