Portland, Ore. — MVNO Consumer Cellular is getting into the home phone-service business.

The company launched a cellular base station that plugs into a home phone to carry incoming and outgoing calls over its cellular network. Consumers can assign their home’s existing phone number to the device.

The Wireless Home Base Device, designed to help consumers cut their home-phone costs, is available for $35. Service costs $10 a month if added as an additional line to an existing Consumer Cellular account, enabling users to share minutes between their home device and mobile device.

The Wireless Home Phone Device plugs into a home’s electrical outlet, but it also runs on a battery for use in an RV or other out-of-home location, the company said. The battery delivers 3.5 hours of talk time or up to 36 hours of standby time.

Consumer Cellular targets the 50-plus age group with no-contract postpaid service. It sells its service direct to consumers, through more than 800 Sears stores, and through 265 RadioShack franchise stores, having expanded beyond direct selling in 2010 with the launch of sales through the RadioShack franchise locations.
