comScore: Apple Gains Smartphone Share

Only Apple among the top five cellular handset brands increased its share among
U.S. cellular users in the latest quarterly comScore survey, which also found
that the Android and Apple smartphone OSs both increased their share among
smartphone users.

 The number of U.S.
smartphone subscribers surpassed the 100-million mark in January, up 13 percent
since October to 101.3 million subscribers, comScore also found in its survey
of more than 30,000 U.S. mobile subscribers ages 13 and up.

 For the three-month average period ending in
January, 234 million Americans age 13 and older used mobile devices, and among
the top five brands that they used, only Apple gained share. Samsung remained
on top, but its share slipped during the three-month period ending January by
0.1 percentage points to 25.4 percent compared to the three-month period ending
October 2011. LG remained in second place but lost 0.9 percentage points to
come in with 19.7 percent share. Motorola was third with 13.2 percent, down by
0.4 percentage points, while fourth-ranked Apple increased its share by 2
percentage points to 12.8 percent. RIM share was flat at 6.6 percent.

 In terms of smartphone OS share among cellular
users, Android ranked as the top smartphone platform with 48.6 percent market
share (up 2.3 percentage points) followed by Apple with 29.5 percent market
share (up 1.4 percentage points). RIM ranked third with 15.2 percent share,
followed by Microsoft (4.4 percent) and Symbian (1.5 percent).
