Compaq Shareholders Pass Merger

Houston – Compaq executives reported today that the company’s shareholders approved the deal that would have the PC maker absorbed by Hewlett-Packard.

The final results of yesterday’s vote by HP’s shareholders has not been tallied, but company CEO Carly Fiorina said the HP shareholders also approved the deal by a very narrow margin. However, HP board member Walter Hewlett, who has opposed and fought against the merger from its inception last September, has not conceded defeat saying the vote is to close to call at this point. An official tally is not expected to be completed for several weeks.

Unlike the hotly contested HP vote, there was no organized resistance among Compaq’s shareholders to veto the deal and company CEO Michael Capellas had predicted the merger would be approved by a healthy margin.
