T-Mobile announced plans at International CES to double the peak download speed
of its 4G network to 42Mbps, launch at least 25 new 4G devices, and offer its
first two 4G tablets.
The tablets are the Dell Streak 7, which will
be available “in the coming weeks,” and the LG-made Android 3.0-based T-Mobile
G-Slate with Google. It’s due “in the coming months,” the carrier said.
T-Mobile’s first 4G tablet, the Dell Streak 7,
will be capable of peak speeds up to 21 Mbps. It runs the Android 2.2 OS and
features 7-inch WVGA touchscreen with Gorilla Glass, dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2
processor to deliver 2GHz processing speed, and full Adobe Flash Player 10.1
support.
The G-Slate will be the first 4G tablet from
T-Mobile with the Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) OS optimized for tablets. Additional
details weren’t released.
In expanding its 4G smartphone selection, the
company said it would launch 4G devices capable of 21Mbps peak download speeds
in the first half, with 42Mbps-peak phones coming in the second half.
T-Mobile expects 140 million people in 25
metro areas to get access to the 42Mbps peak speeds by the middle of the year.
The network enhancement will also speed up the data rates of many T-Mobile 3G
devices, the carrier noted.
The carrier demonstrated the higher speed
capabilities via a laptop stick developed by ZTE and due to launch in the first
half.
