CEMA Committee Formed To Study Furniture Safety

CEMA announced the official formation of the Home Entertainment Support Safety Committee, consisting of TV receiver and consumer electronics furniture manufacturers.

The HESSC, which is coordinating its work with UL and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), is charged with coming up with both short- and long-term programs designed to show consumers how to safely use TV carts and stands and other home entertainment furniture.

The announcement of its establishment as a formal association activity came just days after RTA furniture maker Sauder, in conjunction with the CPSC, announced it was recalling some 2 million TV carts.

The trio of carts being recalled (model numbers 5055, 5155 and 5251) have a swivel base for a TV, an open shelf for a VCR, and double doors at the bottom.

Consumers who call Sauder’s hotline at (888) 800-4590 or sign in through its web site at www.sauder.com will be sent a free repair kit that will help stabilize the cart.
