Costa Mesa, Calif. — The standards-setting Third Generation Partnership Project 2 (3GPP2) has approved a faster revision of the CDMA2000 1xEV-DO wireless-data standard, the CDMA Development Group said here.
Revision A to the 1xEV-DO standard supports peak data rates of 3.1Mbps to the handset (forward link) and up to 1.8Mbps from the handset (the reverse link). That compares with EV-DO’s current 2.4Mbps maximum to the handset and 135Kbps from the handset. The high data rates from the handset and low data latency "will enable operators to deliver rich multimedia services, such as video telephony, and will enhance user experience," CDG said.
Nine CDMA2000 1xEV-DO commercial networks are in Asia, North America and Latin America today, with four more scheduled to be deployed in 2004. CDMA2000 1xEV-DO already delivers the highest data rates in commercial networks (average data rates of 300Kbps to 600Kbps) and supports advanced data applications such as MP3 transfers and video conferencing, TV broadcasts, video and audio downloads.
The competing 1xEV-DV technology delivers data at peak rates to 3.1Mbps, but it allows for simultaneous voice and data sessions.
The CDMA Development Group is a trade association formed to promote the development and adoption of CDMA technologies. The Third Generation Partnership Project 2 (3GPP2) is 3G standard-setting group consisting of North American and Asian interests.
