Casio Unveils New Camera Lens Design

8/05/2004 12:00:00 PM Eastern

DOVER, N.J. — Casio announced the development of a new zoom lens technology that it says will "greatly reduce" the already diminutive dimensions of popular selling pocket-sized digital cameras.

The announcement was made in conjunction with Casio's Japanese parent company, Casio Computer.

The new lens design uses Lumerica, a transparent ceramic material developed by Murata Manufacturing.

According to Casio, Lumerica has the same light transmitting qualities as the optical glass commonly used in today's conventional camera lenses, with two exceptions: its refractive index is greater and it is stronger. Casio developed a process by which to create lenses with Lumerica that will result in cameras with a 20 percent reduction in profile size.

Casio plans to introduce digital cameras that incorporate the ceramic lens in the near term.
