4/27/2004 01:02:00 PM Eastern

Lake Success, N.Y. — Canon added two new high-end MiniDV camcorders to its Optura lineup with the launch of the Optura 30 and Optura 40 Mini DV 2.2-megapixel camcorders.

Both units will ship to dealers in late May and feature Canon’s image stabilizer, an RGB primary color filter for better color rendition, improved audio processing, a high-resolution, true 16:9 widescreen mode, PictBridge compatibility and a number of digital still camera features.

The Optura 30 and 40 support the Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP) which enables data transfer with a Windows XP or Mac OS X (version 10.1) without driver software and use SD/MMC flash memory for capturing digital still photos.

For digital still photography, the units are built around Canon’s DV Photo Plus platform which integrates Canon's optics, a 2.2-megapixel CCD image sensor, the company’s DIGIC DV image processor and the Print and Share feature, which allows users to print photos directly from the camcorders to a Canon printer with one button.

A simultaneous photo-recording feature lets users snap 640-by-480 photos to the memory card while video is captured to the camcorders’ Mini DV cassette.

Other still-photo features include a continuous shooting mode, selectable focus points, auto exposure bracketing and horizontal/vertical trimming, permitting the user to customize a still image in the camcorder.

The Optura 30 will feature a 12x optical/240x digital zoom and an estimated street price of $899.

The Optura 40, for an estimated street price of $999, will offer a 14x optical/280x digital zoom, a manual audio level control located in the viewfinder and 2.5-inch LCD screen. The Optura 40 also includes Canon's Super Night Mode/Night Plus functions that offer users the option of adding light as needed by automatically turning on and off a white LED light positioned on the front of the camera.
