Canon Announces New Scanners

8/02/2006 08:11:00 AM Eastern

Lake Success, N.Y. — Canon announced four consumer scanners last week, offering consumers with piles of negatives moldering in attics a path to step into the 21st century.

The four models include the CanoScan 8600F, LiDE 600F, CanoScan 4400F and the entry-level LiDE 70. The 8600F, 4400F and the LiDE 600F feature 4,800 by 9,600-dpi optical resolution. The 8600F and 4400F also offer a built-in film adapter unit (FAU) for 35mm negatives and mounted slides.

All models have the company’s one-touch “EZ buttons” to copy, scan, create an Adobe PDF file or to resize an image for e-mail automatically.

The 8600F, 4400F and LiDE 600F can create customized PDF documents with buttons for color or black-and-white PDF creation alongside a custom button to save individual preferences, and a “finish” button that completes the creation of a multi-page PDF file without a PC.

The 8600F, for an estimated $179, can scan up to 12 frames of 35mm film, four mounted slides or medium format negatives. For film scanning, the model features Canon’s FARE Level 3 technology (film automatic retouching and enhancement) for reducing the effects of dust, scratches, fading and graininess. It features seven EZ buttons.

The LiDE 600F can scan in three different positions — vertically, horizontally or open at a 180-degree angle for handling wide or three-dimensional objects. The 600F draws power from one USB cable. The $149 unit comes with a 35mm film adapter unit that scans up to six frames at once and employs FARE level 3 technology for image enhancement.

The 4400F losses the FARE enhancement technology and will sell for an estimated $99.

Finally, the LiDE 70 will retail for an estimated $79. It features 2,400 by 4,800-dpi color resolution, four EZ buttons and Canon’s Z-Lid top to accommodate bulky items. It draws power from a USB connection.
