Boston Acoustics Introduces SPZ Reference Component Speakers

Boston Acoustics will unveil its SPZ-Series reference component speakers during International CES in the North Hall, booth 2825.

The most significant performance change for the two SPZ models — the SPZ60 (6.5-inch woofer) and SPZ50 (5.5-inch woofer) — is an increase in maximum peak-to-peak driver excursion of 22mm, nearly 1 full inch. This translates to a significant increase in bass extension and dynamic potential, so they deliver the performance of much larger speakers while retaining the ability for “drop-in” installation using factory locations in a wide variety of vehicles.

Both utilize an improved version of the Z Series’ Type-M1 1-inch anodized alloy dome tweeter with 360-degree rotational tweeter plane, which allows the owner to tune the soundstage from OEM speaker locations.

Retained from the earlier Z Series are Boston’s long-strand carbon-fiber woofer material; TwinStage heat sinks, which maintain the low voice-coil temperatures essential to high-volume; low-distortion playback; and cast-aluminum woofer baskets with RadialVent cooling for improved strength, heat dissipation and air flow. The SPZ Series also uses system-specific crossovers, housed in aluminum cases that pull heat away from the internal components to increase power handling. The crossovers feature 24dB/octave filters and equalization settings for quality sound performance in infinite-baffle and reduced-volume enclosures.

The new SPZ models feature all the installation flexibility of their predecessors, thanks to Boston’s VariMount — a selection of mounting adapters that allows the SPZ models to fit the most common factory speaker locations without radical modification: among others, 165mm and 5-inch by 7-inch locations (SPZ 60), and 130mm DIN cutouts (SPZ 50). Additionally, each features a removable axis-mount, which allows its tweeter and woofer to be installed in a single speaker location or separately in a true component-style layout using flush, surface or angle mounting. The speakers will be available in February with a $1,200 suggested retail.
