Blu-ray Disc Association Formed

Hollywood, Calif.— Members of the Blu-ray Disc Founders Group announced the formation of a new Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), which will be charged with establishing format standards and promoting the further development of Blu-ray Disc business opportunities.

The announcement was made at a series of Blu-ray Disc seminars held recently in San Jose, Calif. and Tokyo. Combined the two events drew almost 500 people from 242 companies.

Attendees were told how they can play a role in the format creation, technology contribution and working with BDA’s operations.

With the establishment of the BDA, the Blu-ray Disc Founders Group will be re-incorporated into the BDA. The Founders Group is currently developing the membership application processes and operating procedures.

The BDA will be open to companies that want to participate in the future development of Blu-ray Disc technologies and/or help develop, promote and establish the BD format as an industry standard for high-definition optical storage.

The founding members believe Blu-ray Disc is suitable for a variety of applications, including high-definition movie and PC data storage, and is “the perfect storage medium to enable digital convergence bridging between PC applications and consumer electronics entertainment devices.”

The group members said the addition of new members should foster greater competition in the development of new products, applications and business opportunities within BD.

Applications will be available in early September 2004 and the first official meeting of the new BDA is planned this Oct. 4in Tokyo. Updated information on the application process is available at www.blu-raydisc-official.org.
