Best Buy Consolidating Geek Squad Service Centers: Report

Solon, Ohio – Best Buy plans
to shut half its 16 Geek Squad service centers nationwide, according to a
report by ABC-TV affiliate WEWS in Cleveland, Ohio.

The report was based on
information from an anonymous source who said the local Solon, Ohio, store
would be among the eight locations affected.

Best Buy confirmed the
Solon closure, which is expected to be completed by April 29. “We notified the
45 employees at our small service center in the Cleveland area of our plans to
consolidate service centers and repairs operations,” the chain told
NewsChannel5. “The changes in the volume and types of products handled through
these facilities have forced us to consider ways to better streamline our
operations and be more relevant to the needs our customers have today.”

The regional facility’s
TV and majap repair functions and in-home support services will be relocated to
one of the company’s core service centers, Best Buy said.

The source said employees
were informed in a conference call last Friday in which the chain attributed
the consolidation to improved efficiencies.
