Averatec Ships $299 GPS

Santa Ana, Calif. — Laptop manufacturer Averatec is shipping this month an aggressively priced portable GPS that doubles as a portable media player at $299 suggested retail price.

the new Voya 320, is the company’s second GPS model, as part of its expansion beyond laptops and will sell through OffficeMax and other stores.

The Voya 320 has a 3.5-inch touch screen and preloaded maps of the full United States plus 1.6 million points of interest.

The device supports the MP3, MP4, AVI, WMA, WMV, DiVX and JPEG formats and has a rechargeable lithium ion battery that provides two hours of continuous use. It may be used also for hiking or bicycling.

Averatec considers itself the “Honda Civic” of laptops and said it hopes to bring to the GPS category the same practical, lower priced utility.

“We give the quality, benefits and features you need at a very low price point,” said a spokesman noting that GPS devices have much in common with laptops as they both rely on screens and a good battery life.
