AT&T Readies First Android 2.1 Phone

Dallas – Carrier
AT&T will offer its first Android 2.1 OS smartphone June 20 with the launch
of the HTC-made Aria, which will retail for $129.99 after $100 mail-in rebate beginning
June 20.

The company also
plans a June 20 launch of the Pantech Ease, which it described as its first keyboard-equipped
touchscreen phone designed to appeal to simplicity-minded consumers. It’s also
the carrier’s first quick-messaging phone targeted to those consumers.

The full-touchscreen
Aria, due through AT&T stores and the carrier’s website, will be HTC’s
first Android phone sold through AT&T. It will also be HTC’s first AT&T
phone with the handset maker’s HTC Sense user interface and its Friend Stream
feature, which aggregates Facebook, Twitter and Flickr updates in a single spot
on the display. The Sense UI has a seven-panel home page that brings often-used
apps and info to the main screen for easy access.

Aria features
850/1900MHz 7.2Mbps HSPA wireless-data technology, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/ for free
access to AT&T’s 20,000 hot spots, 600MHz processor,  3.2-inch capacitive WVGA touchscreen with
haptic feedback, included 2GB MicroSD card, SDHC-capable MicroSD slot, assisted
GPS, stereo Bluetooth, 5-megapixel camera/camcorder with autofocus and up to
six hours of talktime.

The Pantech Ease
is a quick-messaging touchscreen phone with slide-from-the side QWERTY keyboard
retailing for $69.99 after $50 mail-in rebate. It requires a minimum $20
messaging or $20 messaging/data plan.

When closed, Ease
features send, end and back keys as well as a navigation pad on its front face.
The slide-out keyboard features large, well-spaced buttons, the carrier said.

The phone, which has
a 3.2-inch touchcreen, comes with switchable “easy” and “advanced” modes. The
easy mode minimizes scrolling and highlights often-used features, AT&T
said.

Other features
include 2-megapixel camera and 850/1900MHz HSPA wireless data.
