AT&T Now Has Samsung’s Galaxy, Mobile Hot Spot

DALLAS —

Sunday, Nov. 21, was a big day for AT&T
as it began to sell Samsung’s Galaxy Tab and joined
other major cellular carriers in the mobile hot
spot market with the Novatel-made MiFi 2372.

With its Galaxy announcement, AT&T
became the last of the big four cellular
carriers to announce plans for Samsung’s
3G-equipped unit, available yesterday
at an unsubsidized $649 with
prepaid-data plans.

One prepaid data plan costs $14.99 for 30
days if use with a cap of 250MB of usage.
The other monthly plan costs $25
for up to 2GB of usage. The data plans
also include unlimited access to AT&T’s
national Wi-Fi network at no additional charge.

Among the top four carriers, AT&T joins only Verizon
Wireless is offering the Tab only at an unsubsidized
price. Other carriers adopted a different strategy. TMobile
and Sprint offer their version of the Tab at a
subsidized price, a two-year data-plan contract and at
an unsubsidized price with prepaid data plans.

T-Mobile priced its Galaxy Tab at $399 with two-year
data contract and at an unsubsidized $599 without contract.
Sprint’s Tab is available at $399 with a two-year
3G data contract and at an unsubsidized no-contract
$599 with prepaid data service as an option.

Verizon Wireless is offering its version of the
Tab only at an unsubsidized $599 with prepaid
monthly access plans beginning at $20 a
month for 1GB of data.

The Galaxy Tab features a 7-inch enhanced
TFT touch screen, 1GHz Hummingbird application
processor, Adobe Flash support, dual
cameras and is powered by the Android
2.2 platform.

For its Tab, AT&T will also offer international
data-roaming plans for its
Tab to provide data coverage in more than 100 countries,
including Europe and Asia, at prices starting at
$24.99. For a limited time, the carrier is also offering
a $50 Samsung Media Hub movie-rental credit with
Galaxy Tab purchases. Through the Media Hub, users
download movies and TV shows via Wi-Fi for purchase
or rental.

On the mobile hot spot front AT&T began selling
yesterday the MiFi 2372, which runs on the carrier’s
7.2Mbps HSPA 3G data network.

The device is now available at AT&T-owned stores
nationwide or on the carrier’s web site at $49.99 with
two-year commitment to any of AT&T’s Laptop Connect
data plans and after $100 mail-in rebate, which
takes the form of a promotion card.

The MiFi will simultaneously connect up to five Wi-Fiequipped
mobile devices to the Internet, including laptops,
tablets, the iPod Touch, and portable game players.

The device’s OS also delivers browser-based downloading
of widgets to add such apps as data-usage
tracking, SMS, as well as GPS-enabled locationbased
widgets, including GeoSearch and GeoWeather.
It features embedded GPS and built-in microSDHC
slot for storage capacity up to 32GB.
