Apple, Verizon Gain Q3 Smartphone Share

10/06/2013 08:00:00 PM Eastern

NEW YORK — Apple and Verizon Wireless increased their share of smartphone sales to U.S. consumers in the quarter ending August, Kantar Worldpanel ComTech found in a consumer survey.

Apple’s share of smartphones rose by 5.4 percentage points to 39.3 percent in the three months ending August while Android’s share fell 5.6 percentage points to 55.1 percent, Kantar found. The research company said it expects Apple’s share to spike higher in the coming months with the launch of the iPhone 5s and 5c.

Windows gained only 0.4 percentage points over the year-ago period to 3 percent, and BlackBerry share slipped to 0.3 percentage points to 1.8 percent. Other operating systems such as Symbian held steady at 0.8 percent.

In countries outside the U.S., Android share is higher in most surveyed countries than it is in the U.S.

For the period, Verizon Wireless and TMobile increased their share of U.S. smartphone activations, while AT&T and Sprint shares declined. The four national carriers nonetheless retained their share ranks compared with the year-ago period, with Verizon on top followed by AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile.

Despite its fourth-place rank, T-Mobile posted a 1.1 percentage point gain to 13.2 percent because of strong Apple sales and discounting, Kantar said. T-Mobile’s gain reversed ongoing year-on-year declines, Kantar said.

Verizon’s smartphone share grew 6.9 percentage points to 37.1 percent, while AT&T’s smartphone share fell to 21.7 percent from 28.5 percent. Sprint share fell to 14.6 percent from 20.8 percent.
